Theodore I Laskaris

Theodore I Laskaris
First emperor (q.v.) (1205-1221) and founder of the Empire of Nicaea (q.v.). After the Fourth Crusade conquered Constantinople (qq.v.) Theodore was unable to persuade patriarch (q.v.) John X Kamateros (1198-1206) to come to Nicaea (q.v.). So he was crowned by his own patriarch, Michael IV Autoreianos (q.v.), in 1208. Theodore's chief legacy was in preserving the empire against the Latin Empire and the Seljuks (qq.v.), despite all odds. In 1211 he won a decisive victory over the Seljuks, capturing the former emperor Alexios III (q.v.).
